A question for Josh: Brian McLaren deals with God's "violence" in Question #3 of his new book, "A New Kind of Christianity." I was wondering if you have read this book, and if so, what you thought about McLaren's conclusions.

Mark, have you read Randy Alcorn's "If God Is Good"? It is an excellent resource on this subject--easy to read and very thorough.

Josh: Since death is not the end, I'm still not sure why we would raise the original question if we believe in the scriptures that were written. Whether more people died this century than previous ones, does God change His ways/plan/purpose for us to be able to make sense of it all and justify His actions?

Brian: You raise a great question. If the levirate law is not "in place" why is it being practiced? Oral vs written culture has much to do with this. Make sense? Also, don't know hot to do google updates.

Mark: That's true. But culturally, having just finished a century in which more people died to warfare than all previous centuries combined (many of those countries having an overwhelming relationship with Christianity)...hard questions are being asked about God's role in death (think: Holocaust).

"The writer of this story seems more comfortable than I am in ascribing death to God’s judgment.”

Scripture teaches us that from the beginning God has a plan for His creation. How he chooses to control that seems to be a problem for us.

Man wants to think they control their own path/destiny/will when God says He controls it all. God has Isaiah write that "I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things."

We seem to have a problem with God doing and using all things to accomplish His Will and purpose for man and all of creation. His purpose is restoration and should His judgment be death as in the story, why should we not be able to accept that?
