Opposition.

That’s a good word, Keith. Thanks.

I agree with Keith; opposition.

But these pictures actually strike up more feeling than thoughts or words. The first two sets of photos bring up more heartache, or nervousness along with peace. The last two, for me anyway, the opposing photos give me the same feeling when I look at them. For example: I feel just as much loneliness (or disconnectedness) in the city photo as I do looking at the desert photo.

Hope that makes sense…

To me, I think of Jesus’ words: “you have heard this, but I tell you this.”

I think of the word “context.” While it seems, perhaps, that the left-hand pictures portray more negative images and the right-hand pictures more positive ones, without context it is hard to make that evaluation. In the first set, what is burning, and is the girl peaceful or sad? Or, in the last set, some would find great beauty in the desert and less so in a man-made metropolis. A picture can be worth 1000 words, but without the words a picture can mean most anything.

Courtney:great point about emotions and words. I had not made that distinction because of the genesis of having these photos put together (by one of our OC members)

Phil: Nice. Way to bring Jesus into this. Brilliant.

Phillip: You are postmodern, after all. The verdict is in! “A picture can be worth 1000 words, but without the words a picture can mean most anything.” So rules of interpretation apply to art, film, and music s well as written text?

God, Himself, is with us. I see that in each of the pictures. Regardless of what we see, we know that God is there in all of life’s situations and experiences.

Thanks Steve. That’s a helpful thought, God’s presence permeates all things.
